Susan Coyle 1896-1936 Born Bellshill, Died Milton of Campsie, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 15:16 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to find out what happened to my grandmother between her birth and the age of 14. Her mother died in childbirth and I cannot find her in the 1901 census. I’m thinking that perhaps she was taken into care?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What was Susan's father's name? Have you found him on the 1901? Also did Susan have any siblings?

Apologies for so many questions but it's always advisable to post as many details as you can.

JJ

Hello JJ,
Thanks for coming back so quickly.
Only child Susan’s mother was Ann Jane 1872-1896
Father was unlisted in Susans birth certificate
Ann Janes parents were James Coyle 1825-1891
Susan Canning 1821-1896
Ann Janes siblings were
James 1863-1900
Margaret 1867-1943
Francis 1862-1935
Robert 1853-
Patrick 1856-

Any help would be appreciated

Have checked all of Ann Jane's siblings and cannot see Susan living with them. By doing a free search on ScotlandsPeople for the 1911 Susan (age 14) appears to be living in Kirkintilloch. There is no such match for the 1901.

I've completely drawn a blank, hopefully someone will be able to find Susan for you.

JJ

Have just found this 1901 which may be worth a look -

Hugh Horne   41 b. Croselos, Renfrewshire
Marion Horne   45 b. Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire
Hugh Horne   son 12 b. Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire
Susan Horne   dau 4 b. Bellshill, Lanarkshire

10 Muirhead St, Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire

I cannot find a birth for a Susan Horne and as Susan Coyle appears to be on the 1911 living in Kirkintilloch the above Susan could be Susan Coyle but under the family name of Horne. Perhaps Hugh and Marion Horne 'adopted' Susan.

All very speculative but worth considering.

JJ

Added Hugh's birth can be found under Hugh Horn, 1888, Kirkintilloch

Thank you so much. I will investigate Susan Horne which looks very interesting. Can I ask how you managed to find her? My detective skills would benefit from your expertise
Thanks again and regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

On Anc****y I searched the 1901 Scotland census for a Susan (surname left blank) born 1896 +/-1
location - Bellshill, Lanarkshire.

Susan Horne came up living in the civil parish of Kirkintilloch (same place as 1911).

Checked ScotlandsPeople and couldn't see a matching birth for her but could find one for Hugh Horn(e) who is living in the same household as Susan on the 1901.

Hope that all make sense   :)

JJ
