Illegitimate marriage?
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 23:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've been doing more digging into my Stewart family ancestry in Moffat, Dumfries-shire. Some of you might have read my previous posts about this. However I've found that my 2x Great Grandfather had remarried after the death of his first wife. But when looking at his death record, it was noted that his second marriage was recognised as illegitimate.... So I'm confused because I thought the fact he remarried AFTER his wife died, it would be legitimate?

Anyone can shed a light on this?

Never seen that wording on a Scottish Death Certificate before.

Could wife number 2 have been a bigamist? Also, who registered his death?

Confused also,

Dorrie

Just an afterthought was your 2 x great grandfather born out of wedlock? If so this would refer to his birth status rather than his married status

I've attached a copy of the death record.

You might be right about illegitimate being used to describe my 2x Great Grandfather because he was indeed born out of wedlock. His parents never married as his father went onto marry someone else after he was born so he was raised by his mother.

And I forgot to add, it was his son, my great grandfather, who registered his death.

I think that answers your question. It was referring to your 2x great grandfather's birth as I see from the death certificate that no father is listed.

Something was niggling me about having seen something similar in my husband's tree so I went to check it out and there it was. His ancestor also had illigitimate written on the death certificate only in a different place.

Problem looks solved.

Thank you. I don't know why I didn't realise this sooner... Must be the effects of too much snow here!

No worries glad to help clear this up.

Snow is affecting most of us today. Pleased that the internet was not  ;D

Even here in Edinburgh things are practically at a standstill  :'(
