Jessie Duncan/Asprey West Bromwich Staffordshire
« on: Thursday 01 March 18 11:07 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for My great Grandmother -Jessie Duncan,   her Father was Robert Duncan Shoemaker - he was born in Scotland 1832 -Her Mother was Elizabeth Rule/Duncan (Betsy) born West Bromwich 1850
She was born in West bromwich staffordshire, in 1876- at the age of 16 in the 1891 census- she worked as a domestic servant and lived with her parents at- 48 Gedbury rd west brom, then in 1897 she had a Child My grandmother- Elsie Duncan, maybe in the infirmary/workhouse. Her parents disowned her, a year later she married George Asprey  from west brom in 1898 - and they Moved to Castleford West yorkshire.   Jessie had  3 sisters perhaps half sisters and 2 half brothers
Thomas Duncan born 1855
Elizabeth Duncan born 1857
william duncan born 1860
Kate Duncan 1864
Janet Duncan 1869
Jessie born  1876
Perhaps the descendants of these brothers and sisters might know something?
I am looking for anyone that may know the full story of The Duncan family and -Jessie Duncan/Asprey, as there was a Family notice placed in a Large named newspaper
looking For Jessie's Daughter Elsie Duncan /Asprey/married name -Robbins who lived in Castleford west yorkshire ,
Elsie's son my uncle remembers it but not the dates- it must have been between 1930-1976 Elsie did not respond to this add, and so we will never know who tryed to contact her.
I know its a LONG shot but if i dont try to find out something we'll never know who our real great grandfather was.
Thank you for reading and Fingers crossed,
Brian

Welcome to rootschat!

It may be well worth your writing to the letters page of "The Black Country Bugle":  this is a weekly newspaper, very popular in the Black Country, which is full of articles relating to the area.  You might find that one - or more - of the descendants  respond.

Have you Elsie's birth cert to see who she names as her father?

there are 3 trees on A******y which have this family but Elsie is given the name Asprey and her birth is noted as 1898 - so they may not be too well sourced

Hi Suz,

Thank you very much for the info, its great !
I did have some of it, i did not know George's Mother lived next door and will be looking at the census, again ,I also thought that Jessie and George married in West bromwich in 1898, will look at the marriage in pontefract 1917 that you told me about,  I think Mary j Asprey ended up livingin Castleford with her son Samuel who was killed in WW1
Although As my Grandmother was Elsie Duncan /asprey ,I dont know if we are still related to the asprey's ,I have ordered Elsie's Birth certificate and it should arrive any day now.
Do you know anything about  Elsie's Brothers and sisters the Duncans?
I also didnt know George and Elsie lived Widdup st Castleford ,i know they lived at Wheldon Rd.
Thanks again and please do keep in touch
