CDV for dating please - mid/late 1870's? Haydon Bridge
« on: Thursday 01 March 18 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Please could I have a date for this CDV?

I know that John Smithson was in Lancashire until at least 1874, and by 1881 he'd opened his photographic studio in Leyburn, Yorkshire.

However he had two daughters born in Haydon Bridge, Northumberland: one in 1876 and one in 1878.

Can the dating experts confirm that I'm therefore correct in thinking that this photo dates from that period, please?

The hairstyle was popular in the 1870s Jen and you already know about the square corners being early 70s.

I'd say early 1870s - hairstyle and dress are typical  :)

Many thanks to both of you.

As I said, I know he was in Lancashire until at least 1874, so if this is early 1870's I suppose it might be one taken there but put onto a later (i.e. Haydon Bridge) card  :-\ The earliest definite date I have for him in Haydon Bridge is the June quarter of 1876.

Whatever, very many thanks again  :)

Just checked in some other books, Jennifer, and similar hairstyles and dress are dated 1870-75, so he could have been on the cusp.
