STRACHAN AND MCCARRON/MCCANN HAMILTON, LANARKSHIRE (CONT)
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 00:16 GMT (UK) »
I've been working tirelessly on this area of my family tree as John Strachan is my great grandfather.

You will see this secton of my family tree has been covered in great detail on these boards as we have all searched for clues around this marriage.

I now have a pretty comprehensive history of the couple - John Starchan and Catherine Strachan as detailed in my previous posts.

However one improtant thing still evades me. How did they meet.

Last thing we know about Catherine is she was released from Barnhill Poor house in Glasgow on  27 Oct 1903. Noithing else indicates how she then came to be in Hamilton. She's noted to be living as a lodger at 12 McGhie Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire in November 1903 and marries my great grandfather in Hamilton Mar 25 1904.

John himself left the army after 13 years on Oct 4 1901 and lived in Hamilton at 14 James Street, Low Waters, Hamilton.

I want to understand how this unlikely couple got together and what ever brought Catherine to Hamilton.

Since I have tried everything else possible I have one avenue left to try and thats the witnesses at their wedding - Presumably friends of theirs I would have though. Can anyone help me out by identifying who these people are ? I'm reading it as Bridget and Thomas Taylor but I might be wrong. I've also trid to search for them in Hamilton but come up with nothing.

Any help would be appreciated greatly .

Paul

Paul, if you start up new threads on the same people, please include a list of the previous threads referring to them, so that people can easily refer back to what has already been found.

There are two reasons for this.

First, if people start working on your new thread, they may not realise that they are duplicating what has already been done by other people, which is a waste of everyone's time.

Second, anyone who has contributed to an existing thread is notified when you add a post to it, but if you start a new thread they may not see it.

For the avoidance of duplication of effort, these are previous threads started by you mentioning this Strachan family.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

It looks like she was employed at 12 MacGhie Street as a domestic servant. The proprietor in 1905 was a James Frew.

It looks like she came to Hamilton for employment.

Is the address on the marriage 12 Guthrie Street?

V.R.s have Thomas Taylor as the tenant there in 1904

This is great information - Looks like it is Guthrie Street - a street I've never heard of - Ive looked at the valuation roll you speak of - He was a fireman. What made you think she was there for work?

Thanks for your help

Her address was 12 Guthrie Street in Hamilton when she married and she was employed as a Domestic Servant. She may have worked in a large house or a local hotel but I assumed domestic servants would not live too far from their place of work.

Thats brilliant

I've had a right good search for Thomas Taylor and ELizabeth Taylor on scotlands people but the only record showing is the VR you found. Any other hints or tips on how I can track them down?

Guthrie Street was near the old railway terminus and Thomas Taylor may have been a Railway Fireman who moved around the country in the course of his job.
