Geneaology software to download
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 18:34 GMT (UK) »
I've bought a new PC. It doesn't have a CD drive. I need to get some proper genealogy software. I've tried downloading a couple of free apps but they aren't anywhere near as good as the Family Tree Maker I used previously.

I don't mind paying for software but it does have to be downloadable.

Any ideas?

It seems  Family tree maker is is downloadable, so if you like that then download it. http://www.mackiev.com/ftm/

Over the years I have used Brothers Keeper and you can get a free download and pay and upgrade it for additional options http://www.bkwin.org/  but there are many for free and fee, really depends on what suits you

Brian

I have bought an external drive for this reason. I tried reinstalling my FamilyTreeMaker but it won't load. Having read some other posts on here I now realise it's probably because I'm trying to install a version too old for Windows 10. I'm still a little dubious about buying a program on CD in case I can't get it to load. I'm not particularly tech savvy.

I've had a look at the new FTM and although I'm happy to pay for a program all I can say about the asking price is "Ouch!!"

Try Family Historian - http://www.family-historian.co.uk/  - the trial program is the full version which will allow you to see if it meets your needs

Jill, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my faithful old FTM v6 would install and work under Win10 and I didn't need to tweak anything.  What version of FTM are you using?  It may not necessarily be a case of too old, it could be that there are some versions that will and some that won't work.

W10 is far more tolerant of older software than some of its predecessors - what error message do you get when you try to load the program.

When I try to launch the program I get a message that says
"Family Tree Maker 2010 was not properly closed the last time it was used, You may need to compact your last opened file to resolve any issues caused by improper shutdown. To compact files used "compact files from Tools menu"

However, I cant open any files of any description to use the compact file tool to shut it down.

I've used FH since 2006 and have kept up to date with the later versions. It's easy to use and does all that I need it to do.

I think Falkyrn recommended it all those years ago.
