When I try to launch the program I get a message that says
"Family Tree Maker 2010 was not properly closed the last time it was used, You may need to compact your last opened file to resolve any issues caused by improper shutdown. To compact files used "compact files from Tools menu"

However, I cant open any files of any description to use the compact file tool to shut it down.

I don't use FTM but according to MacKiev's help section you don't need to open a file to compact the database, simply have the program running - the instructions here are for a later version (FTM 2014) but hopefully should be similar enough to work

when copying from disc... always remember to open 'hidden files'  and transfer those as well :)

I used to be Tech Savvy - but not so nowadays.. its beaten me.. :(

however I do remember that when I first tried to save MY PAF prog onto disc - by copying it.. it didnt work
UNTIL I opened up hidden files before transferring and making sure those copied over and it worked..

that brain cell is now resting.. so will not be able to explain further nowadays.  :)

When I try to open the program I get an "application Initializing" message. This lasts for about a minute and then I get an error message telling me that there is a problem and the application is closing.

So frustrating. I can't get past the start-up window to action/fix any of my files
