How else to find Marriage Record ?
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 14:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have a death record giving that persons parents but can find no record in Scotlandspeople site
of the parents marriage or of the mothers death.
They are my G.G Grandfathers parents, his death being in 1905
A James Black married to an Agnes McLean, son Thomas deceased in 1905 in Edinburgh.
Both parents also deceased at this time.

Any advice on where else to look or any thoughts on why I can't find these records ?

Cheers

Have you traced Thomas through the censuses - where did he live, and what do they tell you about birthplace and likely birthdate?

Presumably the death record gives you his age at death?
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Census results show living in Greenock up to 1891, born 1847 in Glasgow

If he was born in Scotland in 1847 to married parents then their marriage won't be included in civil records (which only started in 1855 in Scotland).

You would be reliant on old parish records  (OPR) on ScotlandsPeople, though these provide far from complete coverage of early Scottish marriages.

woiiftm,

As avm228 mentioned, one reason you might not be able to find the marriage record for James Black and Agnes McLean, or a death record for Agnes, is that the parish record sets are not all complete.

For Agnes's death, have you searched under her maiden name?

Have you checked online digital newspaper archives for a marriage notice and obits? (It's not guaranteed but it's always worth looking.)

Regards,
Josephine

The other son John who appears with James and Agnes' on census records was born 9 years before Thomas, so perhaps it was a second marriage for Agnes.  She was still living with John in Glasgow in 1881.  This death looks possible, it fits with her age:

BLACK, AGNES
Aged 75
1886
644/1 677
Bridgeton

MCLEAN, AGNES
Aged 75
1886
644/1 677
Bridgeton
