Baptism of Samuel Clarke
« on: Tuesday 06 March 18 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help me trace the baptism of Samuel Clarke?  On the 1851 census he is living on Victoria Street, Ironville, Derbyshire aged 37 (place of birth is just marked as Derbyshire) states year of birth as 1814.  He had died before the 1861 census so can't pick up any more information from that.  I have little knowledge of the area surrounding Ironville and my thoughts are that he may have been baptised in another village.  I will be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.  Many thanks.

Hi

According to the 1851 census he gives his birth place as Greenhill Lane which is near Alfreton.

He is living with wife Elizabeth and 3 children.

Do you have any certificates,  Death or marriage?

Hi Carol,
Thank you for your quick reply.  I have been looking this morning and on the 1851 translated version it states born Greenhill Lane (not on census image).  I cannot find his marriage to Elizabeth
between 1841 & 1844 (when their first son William was born).  I have not got a death certificate for Samuel to confirm where he died & age at death.  I think that his death was Dec qtr.1858 Basford reg. area.  He had a daughter Charlotte born September qtr. 1855 Basford reg. area, so think that this is possibly his death in 1858.  I am doing this work for a friend & will have to check if she wants to buy a death certificate.  I know that this is the only way to check & confirm that you have the right person and I have done this on my own family.  I now think that possibly Samuel was baptised either at Alfreton or a parish near to Greenhill Lane.  Many thanks for your help.  Regards

Hi Maureen,
I think that you have got this family - what can I say!  Not sure of the records that you have access to but I was floundering with this person.  Will write to you later when this has sunk in.  Many thanks.

Hi Maureen,
I just want to thank you again now that I've got my head sorted out.  I have managed to take the family back another 2 generations by finding his parents marriage in 1800.  Still unable to find Samuels baptism in 1814.   Very best wishes :D.
