Help with finding a family line, records don't match or missing people
« on: Tuesday 06 March 18 13:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I brought my 2nd great grandfathers 2nd marriage record this morning. I struggled to read his new wife's parents names, but with some help on here, believe it right.

Once I put into Ancest, it brought a marriage up for her parents right away, which said Orkney Islands, I thought great as the 1901 census I have of her married to my 2nd great greandfather is has her birth as Orkney Island.
So the marriage for her parents brought up this
John Smith
Spouse:    Herriot Thomson
Marriage:    29 Mar 1855 - Walls and Flotta,Orkney,Scotland

I then found a census record for them for 1871 just 4/5 years of the approx birth I have for my granfather's wife according to their marriage record. (She was also married before and widower the same as my grandfather)

But the 1871 census, said this -
Hurliness , Walls and Flotta , Orkney
John Smith    45 fisherman
Harriet Smith    48 wife
Alexina Smith    12
Christina Smith    4

It has him as a fisherman but on the marriage record of her it says her mother and father both deceased and that her father is a shoe maker.
She is not on this census.

Any suggestions, I also can't find her death her husband my great grandfather died 1938 He was David brand born 1858 and a police constable.

Thanks. I',m including a few snippets.

See what you mean  :-\

There is an Alice Smith, 26 and an Upholsterer's Seamstress. Born Longhope Orkney. She shows at 9 McAlpine St, Anderston Glasgow.

Given she showed as a widow when she married David Brand, have you tried looking for a possible first marriage for her?

Monica

Is this Alice's first marriage (you don't give a date for the one you have posted
From Scotlands people
SMITH ALICE
REID FRANCIS
1896
644/2 160
Camlachie

It is normally best if you try tracking Alice back on census until you find her with her parents  ;)

Well done great thank you. I just brought the record. It must be her as has her father as a shoemaker again! So know idea where her father is yet. This is by far the worst to date record I have brought, I can make about 5% out  :o ;D

Any help please?

Thank, I have enclosed small clipping. I have had to do it in two parts as was too big each time to upload.
