Trying to find some missing Richmonds from Berkshire
« on: Friday 09 March 18 14:25 GMT (UK) »
In 1841 the Richmond family are at Castle House in Donnington, just north of Newbury, Berkshire.  HO107/17/23/8/11

Thomas Richmond     35 Ag Lab
Lucy                 35
Betsey         15
John                 12
George         9
Joseph         7
Helen         6
Maria         3
Mary                 2
All born Berks, except Lucy & Betsey born in Hampshire

The eldest son was nearby at Shaw Red Farm HO107/17/21/5/4
William Richmond    12 Ag Lab born Berks

I know what happened to  Thomas, Lucy, John, Joseph, Maria and Mary, which leaves:

Betsey (or Elizabeth) baptised Oct 1826 Newtown, Hants. Had daughter Emily 1 Jan 1846, and then disappears.

William born 1830 – only found in 1861 at River, Kent aged 30 railway labourer.

George born 1832 – in 1851 at Fox Grove Farm, Kingsclere Hants aged 20 farm servant

Helen (or Ellen) born 1835 – in 1851 with mother Lucy at Parrs Yard, Newbury.

I wonder if Rootschatters with fresh eyes can find what happened to these four?

There is a marriage in Shepton Mallett Reg District for Ellen Richmond to Joseph Gane in Dec Q 1853.  I can't see an online parish record but they can be seen in the 1861 and subsequent censuses.  The 2 daughters who appear in the 1861 census both have mmn Richmond.  The only oddity is the place of birth shown for Ellen and her age is a bit out.

What do you think?

Thanks for finding that, Barbara - but I don't think it quite feels right.

Ellen Gane nee Richmond was consistent that she was born in Shepton Mallet.
I would say she was born 1832 and baptised 14 July 1833 at Shepton d/o James and Sarah Maria Richmond.

Looks as if one of the Gane daughters, Ellen Sarah Maria, was named after her mother/maternal grandmother.

I can't find the 1853 marriage in parish registers so presumably registry office or chapel.

Lots of Richmonds in Shepton Mallet area - one thought to pop in the file.

Have you also discounted William who in 1871 is in Tower Hamlets with wife Mary and child Emily. William is a Railway agent age 41. No place of birth given for any of them.

Thank you everyone.

Emily was with her grandmother Lucy at Parrs Yard Newbury in 1851 and 1861. I have her birth certificate and she is Elizabeth (Betsy)'s child, despite what was recorded in 1851. No sign of her after 1861.

An Emily Richmond married Samuel F Slipper in Reading in 1876, but FamilySearch says she was born 1828! 1826!

Rosie, I've not discounted those Westminster and Tower Hamlets finds, because I've not seen them before - many thanks for finding. I'll have a look and ponder.
