Hi Claire, I have just posted a thread relating to Charles on the Norfolk thread.
A cousin who is also descended from Charles contacted me yesterday and said they found that Charles must have enlisted in East Anglia as he first appears on Musters when they have people enlisting from there in 1793
On musters Charles is listed as Charles DEBRIX
We think we have Charles dying 1825 Leicester listed as Charles Devereux.
Charles marries Judith Watlen/Watler 1797 Salisbury listed as a Private in the 1st Dragoon Guards. Charles is listed as Charles DEBROOKS on the Marriage.
He baptises children in Derby as Charles DAYBROOKS, One child is bapt as Devereux in Dorking, Surrey then the rest are bapt as Deborex/Deborax/Debrox/Debrex in Leicester. I descend from his son John who was born in Croydon, we think whilst Charles was stationed there but there is no baptism for him. The family settle in leicester. His children and descendants use the name Debrex/Debrox. The family doesn't use Devereux and constantly uses DEB over DEV.
Given the date of Enlistment abt 1793, I think he is perhaps born around 1770?
My cousin went to archives and they wrote -
''muster list June -Dec 1793 is the first to include Charles (on foreign service) and there are men at Woodbridge, Stowmarket and Needham. The report was compiled at Ipswich 12 Apr 1794. NB there is no influx of men with obviously foreign names''
''So during the period when Charles was recruited the regiment was based at Ipswich with men also in other locations in East Anglia. It is therefore most likely that Charles was recruited in this region.''
He seems to have been discharged 1802 Derby along with a few other people, But he has no pension record and no discharge record has been found.
