Welcome to rootschat, Irondale.

Are you looking for information about all his children or about his parents and birth in Ireland?

Is this the census return in 1861
Address 2.Springfield St Greenock

There are a few other people mentioned and a Sweeny family
No mention of Katherine or Mary ?
Do you have dates of birth for the children and place ..the more information you give will help trying To trace the family

Thank you.
I do know for sure that John McKinnon was married to Jane McKay.  They had 8 children.
Daughter Mary Ellen McKinnon was born 10-26-1854 in Bally Castle, Ireland.  Daughter Katherine (Kate) McKinnon was born in 1853 in Bally Castle, Ireland.  Mary Ellen and Katherine immigrated to the United States on 9-24-1874 on the ship Victoria which departed from Glasgow, Scotland and arrived in New York.  I only have the 1861 census to go by at this time..
I believe the other individuals on the 1861 census are not family members but people who shared the home with John and Jane Mckinnon. I believe they may have also worked in a foundry near Springkell St.
I am interested in finding information on the other 6 siblings of Mary Ellen and Katherine McKinnon.

When did John and Jane marry ?...What makes you think that is them on the 1861 Census it seems a bit strange Katherine and Mary Ellen are not with them ???...I see several trees on Ancestry with details of these two girls arriving in the US ...Do you have names for the rest of the family

Mary Ellen McKinnon was the last of 8 children and born in 1854.   I don't know when John and Jane married.   I don't know the names of the rest of the family other than the two daughters Mary Ellen and Kate.
I thought that was John and Jane on the 1861 census since it is close to Bally Castle, Ireland where the girls were born.  Can't explain why there are no children on the census so maybe it is wrong which means starting over from scratch to find John and Jane McKay Mckinnon.

Religion?
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

The 1861 Census that you have is Greenock Renfrewshire Scotland ..If Mary Ellen McKinnon was the last child born in 1854 the Jane McKinnon aged 22 would not have been her mother

Thanks Rosie.  I have removed that census from my ancestry.  I will start my search again.  Katherine McKinnon attended a Catholic Church when she came to America.  Mary Ellen attended a Methodist Episcopal Church.
Today I will start searching for them on the Ireland census records.
