Baby Born Onboard

Hello,

Would someone be able to advise me how to go about finding the birth date for a baby born onboard and not listed on the original passenger list manifest?

I have James Joss Wilson, wife Emma and 2 children departed London 11 August 1887 on the SS Waroonga and arrived in Brisbane Australia on 17 October 1887. A baby James Joss Wilson (jnr) was registered in Brisbane 21 October 1887 - 4 days after arriving.

As far as I can tell there's no indication if he was born at sea or in Brisbane - just address at time of registering birth.

I have just found his grave and he has no headstone. He was in the Australian Lighthorse Regiment in France WW1 and I think he deserves a headstone but I want to put the correct birth date on it.

It's not recorded on his Imperial Forces records anywhere - just his age 27yrs.

OK, I've just looked on Ancestry for him and someone there has all the info, including his death in 1959. They have the birth date as 21 Oct 1887, death 5th May 1959, Alice Springs. He doesn't appear to have married. The tree owner also has a couple of photographs of him (one in uniform). She is based in Australia. If you aren't already on Ancestry you should be able to get a free trial subscription or access via your local library and contact her.

Just seen stitchwitch's reply. If the date of birth is correct he wasn't born at sea, unless she's recorded his registration date and not his birth.

That's the birth record I have. My mum had told me that they arrived with 2 children and a baby. That's why I was looking.

Surely though if he'd been born earlier on board the ship they would have recorded that as his date of birth? You need to get his birth certificate.
