Mckay family from Thurso
« on: Monday 19 March 18 22:41 GMT (UK) »
After many months of searching I've finally found my 3x great-grandmother Christina McKay born 1805 on the 1841 census living in Janets Town, Thurso with her parents Hugh and Janet McKay, her sisters Williamina born 1821 and Elizabeth born 1825 and her illegitimate son William Carriby (Carnaby) born 1834 who was my 2x great-grandfather. His father was Salmon fishing merchant John Carnaby, son of lieutenant Alexander Carnaby. But now I have hit another brick wall, I have not been able to find any baptism records for Christina or her sisters or find Christina on any subsequent census records, on ScotlandsPeople. can anyone help find these records.

Have you checked whether Christina married or died between 1841 and 1851?

Possible 1861 as MacKay born 1803 Halkirk.  Living with brother John & family
Halkirk ED 10 page 12 Line 16

EDIT

May not be right entry.  Same person is with brother and family in 1851 but as Christian

It looks like my Mckay family where all born in Sutherland, I've found a baptism for a Christian Mckay's born 1801 Farr Sutherland, and possibly a marriage for her parents Hugh Mckay and Janet Mckay, 1784 in Durness,. This is the first Scottish record I have seen in Gaelic, from what I can make out, Hugh was a grenadier soldier.
The 1851 census looks like a good match, what's bugging me is that if Christian was born in 1801 then there is 20 year age gap on the 1841 census between Christian and her sisters Williamina and Elizabeth, unless there were other siblings that have either died or got married.

If Hugh & Janet married in 1784 and Janet was 75 in 1851 - she would only have been 8yrs old when she married Hugh!!

It would also mean they were married 21yrs before Christina was born in 1805 and over 35yrs before the other 2 girls were born.

Don't think the marriage is the right one.  Also - was she Christian or Christina as you make reference to both as christian names?

There is an 1846 marriage on SP between Christina McKay and Donald Campbell

The 1851 entry shows Donald as son in law although Christina is shown as McKay.   May be worth checking the actual 1851 image to see Christina's marital status

If single - have a look at the 1861 entry for Christ McKay aged 55 born Fave (Farr) Sutherland which is the same birthplace as 1851.    Bower ED 3 Page 14 Line 19.

There is also this marriage which could explain Donald's status as son in law

Name    Donald Campbell
Spouse's Name    Williamina Mackay
Event Date    14 Apr 1849
Event Place    Thurso,Caithness,Scotland
