Gladys was born Gladys Christina Coulton, mother’s maiden name Coulton in St Olave (Bermondsey) in 1914.  The birth was registered in that district in the third quarter of 1914 (July to September), volume 1d page 289.

Because there is no separate mother’s maiden name it is likely she was born out of wedlock.

You can use the reference details we have given you to order her birth and marriage certificates.  Between them those two certificates should tell you who she was born to and what her circumstances were at the time of her marriage.  Order from the GRO online, for which the link has already been given at reply #12.

Legal (formal) adoption was not introduced in England until 1927, so she would not have been adopted in the modern sense as an infant, and it is likely any arrangements made were entirely informal.

Just to add to the information from avm

As Gladys was born in 1914, she wouldn't have been officially adopted as that didn't start until the The Adoption of Children Act, 1926, made adoption in England and Wales a legal process from 1 January 1927. So any arrangement before that would have been unofficial and I doubt if there will be any records.

However, as she obviously knew and kept her original surname, it does look as if she knew her birth family. So you should be able to trace her mother.

(Sorry avm - did I miss the last bit or did you add it?  ;D  Same info anyway. )

There is a tree on Ancestry featuring Gladys Christina Coulton born 30/6/1914 Bermondsey - as has been posted she was illegitimate.

The tree states her mother was Caroline Ada Coulton, born 10/1/1894 Horselydown, Surrey (dau. of William George Coulton and Emily Georgina Lloyd).  The tree also shows that Gladys was brought up by her uncle Charles Henry Coulton so she was indeed brought up by family and not adopted out.   Her mother Caroline married a Frederick Charles Self in 1917.
