A marriage for William Cottey (1822)
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 12:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

William Cottey is my 4x great-grandfather and was born in Sampford Peverell around 1822. He was married to a Mary who was born around 1810 in Holcombe Rogus or a nearby village. I had assumed the Mary in question was a Mary Hellings, who is listed on a marriage register with a William Cottey in Holcombe Rogus in 1845. Most other ancestry trees also have this link. However, FindMyPast has this William marrying Charlotte Wright. Who is also listed on the marriage register on Ancestry. It's frustrating because there is indeed a Mary Hellings baptised in Tiverton in 1812 who would seem to fit the bill, but I can no longer believe she is William's wife. Can anyone help me out?

Many thanks
Samuel

The 1845 entry in the marriages at Holcombe Regus has William Cottey marrying Charlotte Wright on 7th August.
The next entry on the register is for the marriage of Mary Hellings to John Monday which took place on 14th August 1845.

If it helps William's  father was William, a farmer and Charlotte's was Daniel a Labourer. The witnesses were Samuel Wright and Elizabeth Vickers.

Hi
Looking at the new Gro index with mother's maiden name for the didtrict of Wellington Somerset Where they lived.
James Mar 1841 mother Agland
Mary Triphena June 1844 mother Hellard
Maria Sep 1844 mother Agland
Maria Sep 1849 Agland

Given  the two children born 1844 ,it's two couples.

Martha Hellard married James Cottey widower of Sampford P.on the  13 Mar 1835 at Ufflculme-daughter Sarah born 5.8.1841 bapt 6 Feb 1842 Sampford P.

The 1841 census at Holcombe has William Cotty age 20 living with the Aglands ,wife Sarah 25 and James 3mths.
There is a Sarah Agland was baptised at Burlescombe 3 Dec 1815  d of James and Sarah Agland .
It looks like James remarried and he and new wife Mary are living next door.
There is no daughter Mary Agland
The son is presumably is the James Cottey  baptised 11.4.1841 at Holcombe but s of William and Mary labourer.

No marriage for Mary Agland to William Cottey

I think William Cottey was baptised 26 Aug 1821 at Sampford P. s of James and Tryphenia Cottey and his wife was Sarah/Mary Agland born 1815 Burlescombe.

Siblings Ann Smith Cottey at Halberton 9.7.1820,Tryohenia 4.4.1824 SP and John Neale Cottey 12.2.1832 SP,
James Cottey of Halberton and Trphenia Neale of St Andrews Plymouth married at St Andrews Plymouth 23.3.1819.
Trphenia was buried 13.5.1832 at Sampford P.
Father James Cottey is the James Cottey who marries Martha Hellard 13.3.1835 at Ufflcumbe.

James was baptised  3.6.1804  s of James and Sarah Cottey at Sampford P and brother William father of the other William Cottey married to Charlotte Wright was baptised  27.6.1790.

Does any of that help?

Thanks so much to all of you.

That 1851 census is indeed the family and I think all you've said fits in. I imagine the William Cottery marriage is indeed my William as I've seen the Cottey spelt Coatey, Cotte, Cotterell etc. The Tryphena mother makes sense too given the naming of his daughter. Interesting to get married all the way down in Plymouth!

Thanks again.

I see what you mean, mine is Richard (1843). I don't have an 1861 census for the family and by 1871 he's married and has moved on.
