Tracing a family member
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 14:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi there Im trying to verify if I have the right family for this person but it is proving hard so any help would be much appreciated. I have traced a Leonard Gibson born 1822 Nacton Suffolk he married a Hannah List in 1847 in Suffolk but im trying to trace Leonards mum & dad . I have looked in the 1841 census but I seem not not be ablr to find Leonard anywhere. I have one family that I found being a dad called John & mum called Charlotte the only reason I think this might be Leonards mum & dad as they have a daughter called Bathsheba b1836. And Leonard called his daughter this laterin 1853 , as normily people carry on names in families and it is a very unusaul name. Any help would be great thanks  ;)

Do you have a copy of Leonard's marriage certificate?  That should show the name and occupation of his father.

Have you looked for Leonard's baptism?

Greetings.

I found what seems to be Leonard's marriage on FreeBMD https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Dec qtr 1847, Bosmere, vol 12 p613 (on same page Lucy FARROW and Hannah LIST)

Unless you can find a church register online, the best way forward may be to order the marriage certificate from the General Register Office https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ - the certificate should give the father's name and occupation which would narrow down the search.

The name Bathsheba is a good clue that there is a link, but your Leonard could have named his daughter after an aunt, parent or grandparent.

Hope this helps
Philip

John Gibson the father of Bathsheba is also a shepherd, but in 1851 he is aged 41 - which would make him a little young to be having a child baptised in 1824.

John Gibson husband of Charlotte gives his birthplace as Thetford, Norfolk.

At All Saints, Winterton, Norfolk,  John  s/o John and Mary Ann (late Stubbs) Gibson, born 10 April 1809, was baptised 21 April 1809.

Winterton is some distance from Thetford, but the wedding of John Gibson, of East Somerton [near Winterton] to Mary Ann Stubbs took place at St Cuthbert, Thetford on 31 December 1807.

Mary Ann Gibson gives her birthplace as Thetford in the 1861 census.
