BMD records in Brooklyn/NYC from 1880s and onwards?
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 23:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me how I can find birth records from 1880s? I've found out that my 3x Great Uncle James Twaddle Snr emigrated to NY in 1870s and had children- James A Twaddle and Agnes Theresa Twaddle in the 1880s but unfortunately James Snr died in 1892. I'm trying to figure out who's the mother of his children because upon his death, his children were orphaned and were entrusted into the care of a friend.

I'm not sure where to start looking so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Do you know Agnes' married name?  If so, you can look for her in the Social Security Death Index.  If she applied and she knew her parents' names, they would be on the application.  Same for the son.  Also look at marriage records for the children in case parents are listed.  And on death certificates.

I wrote that thread. I do have some basic info about the ancestors I'm looking for. But I'm really looking for information about where to look for American birth records, death records as I'm not sure if Ancestry is the best place to look for them- it's so overwhelming.

Here's a theory I'm looking at.

James Twaddle's death record /obit states he was 33 when he died,. He was a carpenter, his father's name was Charles and he was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. His youngest child Agnes was born abt. 1889, indicating his wife died between 1889-1892.

There is a James Twaddle married to a Maggie in the 1880 census. He a carpenter and about the right age.

1880 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ8G-W4M

There is a Maggie/Margaret Twaddle of the right age who died in 1891 and buried at Holy Cross.

=====

I see an Anne Twaddle age 3 who died in 1886 buried in the same plot as Maggie

=====

I see a Charles Twaddle (infant) who died in 1885 also buried at Holy Cross. Was he the first born son of James and named after James's father Charles?

Death: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WSM-9LY

==============

Might be related also? Was this there first child?

Death: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WSC-58T

===

Is this all a coincidence or are they connected?

The 1892 census has son listed as Joseph Twaddle age 5, but probate records has son's name as James A Twaddle.

Probate: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N7LL-W2C

Is this the same James Twaddle? Age is right and born in Brooklyn. If so, did he die in England (may list parents names in obit /death record there). He is listed a nephew..how related to them?

To answer your subject line question about BMD for Brooklyn.

These two sites are probably the best for that time period. They are free and require no membership. Just click Database Search and choose the type record you wish to search. Both sites are more as less identical as far as content.

Re that 1911 census return, it appears that Henry Stephenson's wife's maiden name was Twaddle. Married in Barton Regis RD q/e Sep 1889. Confirmed by check of children's mmn.

There's a WW1 death for Corporal James Edward Twaddle https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/95517/twaddle,-james-edward/  Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Twaddle, of Longford, Co. Longford. Per Soldiers Died he was born in Brooklyn.
