Seeking a directory lookup please for my ancestor Edward HARTLEY born in 1805 at Gosport Hampshire, son of Lt. Edward Hartley & Sarah Giles. He married Susanna Fanny COLLINS in Portsea in 1832.

I believe Edward was a chemist/druggist around the Portsea area during the period 1825 until sometime during the 1840s when he took his family to London in the Southwark/Lambeth areas.

I am interested in any directory entries mentioning his occupation & also where this was located whilst he was still in Portsea?

Thanks much appreciated.
Cheers, Rob.

Hi

Unfortunately there were no numbers. I've also checked the Electoral registers, no number on there  either, just Arundel street upto 1842. No house number on the 1841 census either.

In 1843 the electoral registers has an Edward Hartley at Hanover Street Portsmouth, possibly not your man but it least narrows the timeframe down for his move to London - he doesn't appear in Hampshire after 1842/3.

That's great Daisy. I have also found him in London in 1845 at 232 Blackfriars Road, so this fits in nicely! Is Landport very close to Portsea. I live in Australia so am not familiar with this area. Is it possible at all to discover what number in Lower Arundel Street he actually lived? Would this also have been the actual chemist shop address? Curious...cheers, Rob

I live in the UK but whenever I want to know the location of anywhere either here or in your part of the world I find looking at online maps useful.   ;)

Landport is part of Portsmouth  ;)

I can't find any house numbers for Arundel Street back in the 1840s  :(

I wonder if contacting the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain might help?

It was set up in the right time period and may have some old records.
