This source places him on the Defiance in 1801 https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_crewman&id=8121

Getting back to the original question, I can't see any mention of his death in newspapers at all.

I have looked at the burial register image and it does say aged 45 years, so the birth year would be 1767/8 if that is correct.

Thanks Shaun..but I am confused. Do you mean he married also in 1797? I agree the signatures do look the same! Cheers, Rob

Yes he married Grace in 1797. She died in 1798. Their son Edward appears to have died in 1800. John Paulby seems to have been the boy's guardian - he was a witness to the 1797 marriage.

If Edward was born circa 1768 there's a possible baptism at Manchester Cathedral https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JM8N-14G

Interesting information Shaun & thanks for the 1768 birth reference. You were saying that the Royal Navy man did marry Grace Osborne. Does this information come from military records? Given the fact of almost identical signatures I would say they are one and the same person. However with the age of 45yrs given at his death I am confused unless of course this is a mistake! The Edward Hartley buried in 1813 is as far as I know the husband of Sarah Giles. Cheers Rob

Does this information come from military records?

The information that he had a wife named Grace comes from the 1798 Allotment Declarations for the crew of HMS Atlas. Her death is noted in the same document as is the subsequent appointment of Jno Paulby as the recipient of his allotment (presumably as guardian for the child). In the 1799 Allotment Declarations for HMS Defiance he continued to pay Jno Paulby (who had been a witness to the 1797 marriage of Edward Hartley and Grace Osborne).

Thanks Shaun for the Allotment information. Incidentally is there record of a will for Edward Hartley? Cheers, Rob
