Royal Irish Constabulary
« on: Sunday 25 March 18 14:39 BST (UK) »
I am a tad puzzled at this one. I have an ancestor recorded as Police Constable on a marriage certificate I have just received. His name was Terence Gargan from Kilkenny b.1813. He married in Kilkenny too in 1848. I have found his service number 1590 which is very early and means he enlisted around 1834/35. I have been looking at the register held by UCD, personnel register, but it starts in 1837 and cannot find him under 1590 anyway.

Am I looking in the right place, does anyone have any tips? Any pointers as ever greatly appreciated.

The records on the UCD site are for the Dublin Metropolitan Police or DMP, sounds like you need to check the RIC records. Find My Past has RIC service and pension records.

Thanks, I didn't realise that.
Blimey, FindMyPast will be buying my shopping list next.
I shall visit my niece next weekend and hound her for a search.

Thanks again

DMP personnel register dating from 1836 to the 1970's. RIC and DMP related genealogical queries should be directed to Garda Jim Herlihy...........

Thanks for this. emails just get bounced back I'm afraid. So it looks like this is now defunct.

The Jim Herlihy one, it reports as mailbox full.
I'll try the new one you suggest.

Perhaps Jim has retired?
