Hi ,

The reason you won't find any birth entry at NSW BDM online is simply that the index does NOT display entries less than 100 years ago.  Access to these records is NOT available to the general public.  BUT ....  your Mum's birth cert (assuming she was born in NSW) should include details about her older siblings and her parents as well as her own birth details.

Do you have a copy of / access to ...that birth registration?

Deaths do go up to 1988,but as Majm pointed out earlier ,you will not find births less than 100 years ago.

If you know the child's parents names you might be able to work out which death it was from the indexes.

Yes, that's right, thanks Carol.  :)

NSW BDM online has three separate indexes.  The birth index does NOT display references for births less than 100 years ago.  The death index does NOT display references for deaths less than 30 years ago.  The marriage index does NOT display references for marriages less than 50 tears ago.

Yes, that 1936 burial found by Girl Guide would seem to match up to the following newspaper cutting:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17316702 15 April  1936 SMH

May I again suggest that a close inspection of the 1938 birth certificate MAY provide some good clues to any older siblings.    :)   NSW birth registration commenced in 1856 and one of the questions posed from the beginning of civil registration is about 'previous issue', which in the 1930s also required the informant to provide info about when/where  married.

I have not found the entry in the NSW index for the death registration for the wee lad, Geoffrey in 1936.  May I note that the cutting shows it occurred in rural NSW and was the result of an accident.  Sudden deaths, particularly for children, required the police to involve the coroner's office.   It is possible that the 'pro forma' burial order was issued by the coroner to the funeral director and that no follow up with the official paperwork from either the coroner or the police or the funeral director resulted in the lodgement with the district BDM registrar for the death after the coronial enquiries were completed.

Did you check  if your family members have copy of or details for that 1938 NSW  birth cert?
