In fact, look who was baptised at the same time & place as William:

It looks as though Barbara had a son just before she married:

Birth: Robert William Thirlaway, Mar qtr 1865 Chester le Street
Baptism: Robert William Barron, son of Barbara (spinster), Lumley, 27 Mar 1865 << same day as marriage
Death: Robert William Barron aged 1, Mar qtr 1866 Chester le Street
Burial: Robert William Barron aged 1 at Lumley, 13 Jan 1866
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)

I think that particular Barbara was the one that died in 1871 - there must have been two, mine was the 'other'!!
