Lookup please: Jane CHAPMAN b1813-15 in 1881 and 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 27 March 18 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for a Jane CHAPMAN (nee Spencer) in the 1901 census. She was born c1813-15 in Seamer, North Yorks and married William Chapman on 31st May 1835.
Children were...
Mary Ann b1835 Seamer
Charles b1837 Scarborough
John b1839 Seamer
Mark (1842-1853) Scarborough
Mark b1854 Scarborough

I have tracked them through the censuses beyond his death in 1873 although not in the 1881 census, where I can't find her.
In 1891 she is with her son John's family at 9 Springfield Place, Scarborough, but then she vanishes again.
I suspect that she died in the March Q of 1907 as a death in Scarborough aged 92 fits reasonably well there.

I wondered if she might be in the workhouse, but I don't know how to search for places by themselves and I can find nothing in general in the 1901 on Ancestry but I note that on FindMyPast there is a Jane Chapman in Filey but I have no access that to FindMyPast.

Can anybody please help by looking her up for me?
Thanks in advance.
 :)

The problem with that Jane, emelton, is that the OP says

Quote
In 1891 she is with her son John's family at 9 Springfield Place, Scarborough, but then she vanishes again.

and the one that you've found is with George and Jane Scales in Queen St, Filey in 1891

RG12/3962/20/33

1891 ref for Jane with son John is RG12/3965/101/35

OP doesn't list a daughter named Jane.

Yes, the Jane Chapman in Filey in 1901 is clearly the mother of Jane, wife of George Scales.
Thanks for your help; back to the drawing board...

Just for clarity, I strongly suspect that MY Jane Chapman died in Scarborough.
There is a death in Mar Q 1907 of a Jane Chapman who was born about 1815 - mine is born c1813.

I've done lots of different searches for her on the 1901 - the only one coming up is the wrong one. Would she be staying with one of her other children?  John and family are still at Springfield Place in 1901 but no Jane.
Will try to see if I can find her in a local workhouse/hospital.

I've just been working my way through the children in 1901 and she hasn't shown up anywhere.
Still nothing for 1881 either yet...
