Intriguing: we do not have any info about the rumoured baby, just family story, so now following that possible lead.. thanks!

Maria Turner born 1881 in Deeping St Nicholas, Lincolnshire, census 1891, then disappears, assume name change but not traced yet.
Family story that Sophia took a baby plus one older sister when she left, which we believe was prior to May 1898, but we all know how family stories vary down the generations...

Florence Elsie Turner birth is registered in June Q of 1899

Looking at deaths of a Florence Elsie somebody who were born April-May-June 1899 I find
Florence Elsie Johnson born 6 April 1899, died in Mansfield 1975

There is a matching Florence E Johnson in the 1939 register, husband's name is George W Johnson.

There are two marriages of a George W Johnson in Mansfield district. One to Florence E Rix in 1922, and one to Florence E Turner in 1932.*

1901 census shows
Shirebrook (Mansfield District)
Robert Rix 37  Rudham, Norfolk
Sophia Rix 41  Market Harborough
Kate Rix 3       Shirebrook
Florence Rix 2  Shirebrook

Kate Hilda Turner birth Mmn Essex registered in Bourne 1897

There are two further children shown in 1911
Birth index shows
Robert Rix Mmn Essex  Mansfield 1901
Beatrice Rix Mmn Essex Mansfield 1903

*suspect this may be a remarriage of the same couple.

Brilliant, Galium, I think you’ve cracked it!

So maybe Kate was the “baby” she took with her, and Florence was born after she left home?
