Where to look for marriage record in Donegal/Tyrone?
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 02:06 BST (UK) »
I don't have much to go on but I'm looking for the marriage of Robert Nelson to Mary in Donegal or Tyrone.

Their daughters, Margaret bc1819, and Martha bc 1823, emigrated to Australia in 1841, variously giving their birthplaces as Donegal (more often) or Tyrone. Martha said she was the youngest daughter in a newspaper record of her Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Any leads gratefully received  :)

Research in Ireland can be difficult without a townland or parish.
The earliest record Tithe Applotments that might be helpful is 1831 Robert Nelson and 2 other Nelsons (male) at Ludden, Donegal.
Try Tithe Applotments,Donegal IGP, Family Search. Also do you have death records for the 2 daus. which might give more information.

The National Archives does a good job of explaining what the Tithe Applotments are and who is included
http://www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie/ you can search from there as well.

Thanks Stephanie,

Unfortunately neither of the daughter's death certs have much info. One has parents unknown, the other has father unknown Nelson, farmer. The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum record lists one's parents as Robert and Mary Nelson.

I didn't think of the Tithe Applotments. I found a Robert Nelson in Luddan in Griffiths in 1857 so I could probably rule this one out.

I'll see what else I can find in the Tithe Applotments.

I don't have much to go on...

Clutching at straws here, but the tithe applotment books show a Robert Neilson in the townland of 'Drumdite'  (Drumdoit) in Urney parish. The only similar surname in Drumdoit in Griffith's Valuation, the 1901/1911 censuses and the PRONI Will Calendars index is Nelson. A Robert Neilson of Urney married a Mary Sproule of Raphoe on 24 January 1805 in Raphoe Church of Ireland parish. There is a mention in the following link of a Robert Nelson, father of Elizabeth of Urney who married in 1845, also William Nelson, father of Lydia of Drumdoit who married in 1854: https://cotyroneireland.com/churchrecord/urney.html

Thanks Gaffy, any straw is welcome.  :)  Great lead to follow up, especially if it's near Co Tyrone. The only problem I can see with this Robert Nelson is that the sisters were supposed to be orphaned by 1841.

Interesting that Robert, William and Elizabeth are all family names..
