It really puzzles me that my great grandmother had two different maiden names Berger and Shuman/Shulman and three different first names: Sheba, Sophia and Hilda.

All very fascinating.

Ancestry does have a (German-language) collection “Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934” including some landing at Hull or Grimsby - though most passengers were en route to America.

You may find something relevant in there, though I think you will have your work cut out!

My grandfather Abraham, was born on the way, but he wasn't registered for a few years, so his birth certificate is Manchester, but I think he was born on the train to Hamburg

Highly unlikely - late registrations do happen, but for one that late it would only be with the authority of the Registrar General (which would be shown on the entry), and who would want some very good reasons and evidence for allowing it, and the date of birth would be shown as 1900 or whatever it was. If the birth did occur on the journey, then it could not be registered in the UK at all (unless they lied about that)....

The 1911 census shows Abraham as 6 years old, born in Manchester which fits with his 1905 birth certificate - and  it shows Sam and Sheba as having been married for 7 years.

It all suggests that perhaps they came to England a little later than you think.

I agree with what AntonyMMM says.

Also, Samuel’s 1883 birthdate means he was only 16-turning-17 in 1900.  It looks likely that “arrived 1900” is a round-number approximation passed down the family, unless there is some ironclad documentary evidence supporting it.

did you consider that your great grandfather might have married twice so the different surnames and first names could be explained

my great great grandfathers was also from Russian pograms his first wife dying just before. he married a relative of hers with the same surname.

My Great Grandfather came from Russia in 1900. His name was changed at the docks by mistake. He lived and died in Manchester as Samuel Polinsky. His son Abraham changed the name to Paulden in 1930.

I would like to know the family name in Russia. Any help appreciated.

are you POSITIVE his name was Polinsky ??...could it have originally been Pochinsky ..
When ALIENS entered the Port of Liverpool they had to register legally
1st July 1902 Samuel Pochinsky - Russia - arrived and was registered at the address of 72 Canterbury Street ,Liverpool...

18th September 1902 - SHABBETHAI Heller - Russia - as they couldn't speak any English - could Sheba be Shabbethai ??   and Heller become Berger ??
no disrespect to any previous posts but if these were my ancestors I personally would research these two people if only to rule them out   ....just my opinion - Hamburg to Liverpool was a very common cheap way to enter England .

Samuel Pochinsky died in Liverpool aged 63 in 1931 - so NOT your family ...sorry to build your hopes up

Maybe the name is Polenski or Polensky, (I had a relative that was married to a Polenski, but they used either spelling).
