I have Fanny as born 1863:

TAYLOR, FANNY       FISHER     Order
GRO Reference: 1843  S Quarter in EDMONTON  Volume 03  Page 132

If she married in May 1863 she would not have been a minor.

Really, well I never knew that. It must have been common then because loads of my lot seem to marry very young, 18 or 19, a couple from Ireland even younger. One wedding certificate I do have states age of the bride as 'full term minor', she was just 18.

Fannys dad was at the wedding though so that does suggest agreement from parents. Its just odd that Joseph does not appear on census with her but they do have children. Yet he appears on census with Deborah and the children he had with her.

Oh for a time machine...

Thanks all for your help.

On 1863 marriage, Fanny likely became known by her husband's surname.   :)  GRO  Birth certs DONT have surnames for the baby until well into the 1960s...  Fanny's children would likely become known by her surname that she acquired on her marriage.   That does NOT mean Joseph was their Dad.   :)

True enough. Its an intriguing story though. After Fannys dad died he left her some property which she let out and lived on the income. She appears on the London Electoral Registers as a woman of substance for a few years until her death.

As an engine driver I suppose Joseph worked for the railways, might check that out next. He obviously went through Chelmsford at least..!

Thanks again for all your input, it is really appreciated.

From what I have seen it seems that Joseph Haszell and his first wife, Fanny, only had one child - ie Richard.

Seems that they went their separate ways soon after Richard was born

Maybe the birth certs for either or both David Childs and/or Florence A's birth may provide further information.
