Has he lied..? Can you lie..?

Possibly, however to prove that the third marriage is that of the Joseph Haszell you are researching then you would need the full details of that marriage.

Looks like it. The whole family seems to have moved to London in the mid 1850s and set up as hairdressers. A few thrived but most did not, in fact William, Josephs brother was in the workhouse umpteen times. Maybe this was Josephs way of surviving, women! Who knows.

Thanks again.

Hi,

In case it helps, this website shows the third marriage seems to have taken place at Gt Waltham St Mary & St Lawrence,

http://www.marriage-locator.co.uk/

Are the parish records online anywhere to check it?

Regards,
Daisy

As far as the Fanny Taylor marriage in 1863 is concerned I cant find Joseph on any further census.
1871, she is living with her dad and first son, Richard. No Joseph.
1881, still with her dad and another child Florence, no Joseph.
1891, still with her dad and daughter Florence, no Joseph. Fanny dies 1897.

The second marriage to Deborah in 1868, Chelmsford is just as strange.
1871, Joseph Haszele is head born 1839 from Ipswich, she is from Great Waltham! B.1847. Two kids, Beatrice and Susannah, 2 and new born. Beatrice dies 1876.
1881, She is living with Susannah and 4 more kids in Fenny Stratford Bucks, no Joseph senior although she has a child Joseph, aged 8, born in Ipswich!
1901, She is living in Luton with Susannah and more kids. No Joseph..!
1911, She is in Luton with Susannah still. No Joseph. She dies in 1931

So she is from Great Waltham where the marriage was and Joseph...when he is there, his details match too. Is he living a double life? She has had a son Joseph according to 1881 census in Ipswich which is odd.

Like Eastenders this family..!

I've been looking at a certain branch of this dis-organised family and I've now come across a Joseph who seems to be married three times!
Joseph Haszell b.1839 in Ipswich, moves to London and then:

marriage 1:   1863   East London, London, Joseph Haszell to Fanny Taylor but he never lived with her as she stays with her father.

marriage 2:       1866   Shoreditch, London, Ann Huggins to Joseph Haszell

marriage 3:   1868   Chelmsford, Essex, to Deborah Green. I think the census shows he lived with her.

I'm sure its the same Joseph Haszell, could you get divorced so easily then? I am really confused with this one, do I need to order all three certificates. Any advice as ever greatly appreciated.

Joseph Haszell, age 27, Bachelor of All Saints Poplar - an Engineer, father Joseph - Hairdresser
married 24 Dec 1868 Gt Waltham after Banns
Deborah Green, age 22, spinster of Gt Waltham, father = George Green - Labourer

He signed, she made her mark
Witnesses were George and Mary Ann Watson

First marriage -

Joseph Harzell, full age , Engine Driver
25 May 1863, St Botolph without Bishopsgate, City of London
Father - Joseph Hartzell. Hair Dresser
Spouse - Fanny Taylor
Spouse's father's name -
Wits - James Thomas Taylor & Matilda Haszell?

JJ

and so it may be possible to compare his 1868 signature with the 1863 signature  :)  :)  :)

Hi JM  :D

Just checked the signatures on the only 2 relevant marriages and they MATCH

By the way - Fanny was a minor when she married Joseph in '63. Her father, James Thomas Taylor was a Butcher. Residence for both Joseph & Fanny at the time of marriage was the same (13 Bakers' Buildings)
