Parents & birth of MARY JANE ROGERS
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 14:57 BST (UK) »
Hi, I've hit a bit of a dead end with this lady, who is my great great grandma.

Her birth date is 11th Jan 1886 as stated in the 1939 census (in 1939 she was living in Neath with her husband John Rowlands). The 1911 census also shows she was born in Carnarvon, North wales.

I know her fathers name was John Rogers, as my grandma has a copy of her marriage certificate and he is down as her dad, but I have no further information on him at all.

I've used Ancestry, My Heritige and Find my Past and can only find documents from her marriage (1904, Pontypridd) onwards . I cant find any 1891 or 1901 census with a Mary Jane Rogers born in Carnarvon, or a birth certificate.

I know its not really a lot of information to go on, which is a shame as I've managed to go back quite far with my other great great grandparents. Any help or advice would really be appreciated!

The 1939 register does not give places of birth  :-\

Does the marriage give an occupation for her father and who are the witnesses.  Where and when did it take place

What information does the 1911 census give for her

Ok so I've spoke to my gran, the paper copy she has is practically disintegrated she said!
The marriage was in 1904 in Pontypridd, her father John Rogers had passed away at this point, the only word she could make out from his occupation was 'Quarry', and the witnesses she says looks like it reads Lewis Powell & an L Rogers.. so still not too much to go on i'm afraid!

Hi
I wonder if the birth place could be Carmarthen rather than Carnarvon?
There is a Mary J Rogers in the 1891 Census living in Brynhfryd, Swansea. RG12/4471/17/45.
Father John Rogers Stone Quarryman age 38 born Llansaint, Carmarthen.
Mother Esther Rogers age 35, born Glamorganshire. They have a seven children including Mary.
This Mary J Rogers appears in the 1901 Census living in Llanwonno, Pontypridd, RG13/5004/80/16.
Strangely she is the daughter of William Roberts and Ellen Roberts, could be a typo error, but she is aged 14 birth place Pembrey, Carmarthenshire.

Glyn
Jones - Penmachno/Blaenau Ffestiniog/Capel Garmon
Thomas - Abererch/Porthmadog
Evans - Llangelynin/Llanaelhaern
Jones - Pwllheli/Abererch
Brammer - Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire
Robb - London/Scotland

Based on the births of the younger siblings Esther 1888 and Sarah 1891 I think the Mary Jane Rogers that Glyn found was one of only two children of the name born with that name in the March Qtr 1886

MARY  JANE ROGERS MMN    DAVIES
GRO Ref 1886  March Qrtr LLANELLY  Vol 11A  Page 896

By 1901 the parents disappear and the youngest child Esther is living with her brother Benjamin

On the 1881 Census, John is transcribed as born in Llansaint, Caernarvonshire, but daughter, Mary A, is Llansaint, Carmarthenshire - i.e. confusion over the county name.

They also have a daughter Mary J, born in Cardiff (possible death in 1882). Benjamin is shown as John and probably Benjamin John registered in Gower in 1873.

John Rogers married Esther Davies, Q2 Merthyr Tydfil.
