Visit to Southampton Archive: Maritime Research
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 18:18 BST (UK) »
Is there a visitor to Southampton Archive that could help a researcher from Swansea?

I am building a family tree for my Wife's ancestors and have discovered that her maternal Great Grandfather spent some time working as a Railway Builder on the Durban to Ladysmith Railway back in the years 1884~1890.

It would be very helpful if someone with access to Southampton Archives could, on a future visit, ask for the file on Steamship Spartan (Union Steamship Company) to see if there are any Passenger Lists in respect of a voyage commencing in Southampton on 24 January 1884, making a mail pick-up at Plymouth the following day and arriving at Durban on 22 February 1884.

I am particularly interested in establishing if Benjamin David Pope and his wife Flora Augusta joined the vessel at Southampton or at Plymouth.

Many thanks, JohnG_Swansea

Have not found a passenger list, but two of their children were born in Estcourt, Natal, SA in 1887 and 1891.
regards.

Thank you paco,

Your reply raises more questions than it answers.  Might I enquire the sources of your information, I would very much like to visit the same destination and view the material.

Thank you, JohnG_Swansea.

They are on the 1901 census where it just says Natal for both of them, but on 1911 census it says Estcourt SA. They are Emily L Pope 1887 and Edward B Pope 1891.
regards.

Thank you paco,

That's resolved that then, nothing amiss, if you look again at the 1911 census return signed by B.D. Pope with an address in Bath, Somerset, you'll see that Emily Laura was actually born in Howick, although it's not overly clear and in Flora Augusta's "Birthday Book", it additionally says (words to the effect) that the event took place in a house near the railway station.

We've given up on obtaining a Birth Certificate, and we're struggling to find a baptism record, if one actually exists; but with the help of other RootsChatter's we've seen a Baptism record for Edward.

Regards, and Thanks JohnG_Swansea.
