Emma Haszell
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 23:04 BST (UK) »
I have posted about this family, my family, before but I am really stuck and need some advice or a pointer. Also how do people cope with the number of spelling variations on one name...HASZELL...quite staggering the ways I have seen it spelled, anyway.

Emma Sarah Coomes b.1840 married in Holborn 1858, William Haszell b1834, my ancestor. I have an 1861 census where they are living together in Waltham Cross with their two sons William and James my great grandfather. Then, nothing...the boys are then living with Williams parents in 1871, William is a boarder in London looking for work and Emma...no sign at all. I feel a touch attached to Emma and wonder what happened to her. I cant find her death, workhouse, remarried, emigrated,,, I've tried all sorts but can find no trace of her, Its like she's disappeared!

I have lots of stuff around the other Haszells and their ups and downs and have a real good picture of the family but I really would like to know what happened to Emma, married at 18, two kids at 21 and then...gone! Spelling asides she can't have just disappeared. I need to dot the i's here and cross the t's! What happened to Emma Haszell? She is a mystery and an obsession at the moment.

Can anyone help?

Stepney, London. The Haszells appear to have arrived from Ipswich around the mid 50s.

Emma Sarah Coombs birth reg Sept 1/4 1839 Stepney vol 2 page 400.
It pays to use wildcards * when searching.
I used Emma Sarah Co*m*s. So for Haszell I would try Ha*e*l

According to the 1851 and 1861 census her birthplace shown as Limehouse.

However, if she simply left William and her sons and went off with someone else, living with said person as their wife, don't know how you'll ever find her as no doubt she will be under their surname thereafter.

Yes, Limehouse on the census stuff. I'll try the wildcard stuff but I hope she remarried. He, William, on the 1871 census describes himself as unmarried, seems to suggest either he has left or she has eloped! Leaving the kids with his parents suggests an elopement I suppose.

It seems that he remarried a younger women in 1900, thats why I thought she might have died. What were divorce arrangements then. Would Emma just be living with someone or legally/illegally remarry while he was still alive?

Thanks for your help, its appreciated.

She was christened in St Dunstans, Stepney in 1849 but born 8th August 1840.
Her wedding certificate, April 12th 1858 has James Coomes as father and her age as 'Full term minor'! She wouldn't be 18 till the August. Her husband and his father are down as hairdressers.

Thanks again

God I hope not. What a short life. I hope Peter had her name spelled right on his book at the pearly gates! The permutations on this family name, I have even seen it written as Hatsell, Haysell, haquel...one L, two Ls...even wild cards don't help.

This is sad news though, I shall investigate. Could have been the last straw for the marriage.

Thanks so much.
