Ashford double check
« on: Monday 02 April 18 14:30 BST (UK) »
Hello all! I hope you are well.
I was wondering if anyone could double check that I am on the right line? I've got myself so confused and stressed and worried I've gone wrong. So far I have confirmed that Frederick Hubert Ashford (1888-1951) is the son of James Ashford (1866-) and Eliza C Willis (1864-). Then I believe that James is the son of George Ashford (1831-) and Eliza Mells (1832), George is the son of Moses Ashford (1788-1844) and Elizabeth Strickland (Unknown), Moses being the son of Edward Ashford Jr (1794-) and Rachel George (1750), Edward Jr is the son of Edward Ashford (1718-) and Michol Charlton (1713-). Edward is the son of Emmanuel Jr Ashford (1694-) & Mary Grey (1694) and finally Emmanuel Jr is the son of Emmanuel Ashford (1670-1722) and Eleanor (1662-1722).

So I basically would love if someone could double check that this line is correct: Frederick Hubert Ashford (1888-1951) >>> James Ashford (1866-) >>>  George Ashford (1831-) >>> Moses Ashford (1788-1844) >>> Edward Ashford Jr (1794-) >>> Edward Ashford (1718-) >>> Emmanuel Jr Ashford (1694-) >>> Emmanuel Ashford (1670-1722)

I believe I've gone wrong as for the longest time the family was based in Withim Friary and owned farms and worked on the railway. Then I looked again and I noticed that they were living in South Brewham. My belief is that farmland stayed in the same family for generations, centuries. So I'm not sure why they suddenly left S Brewham for W Friary. I could be wrong though!

Thank you so much for helping me out :)

Hi there

Frederick Hubert Ashford was baptised 30 December 1888 at Witham Friary to James and Eliza Charlotte. Father listed as (something) on the GWR. 1891 census James a labourer, plate on the GWR

James Ashford was baptised 1 July 1866 at Witham Friary 1 July 1866 to George and Eliza. Father listed as a labourer.

George was baptised 7 October 1827 at Witham Friary to Moses and Elizabeth. Moses occupation was a cordwainer, Georges sister Helen (later Ellen on the census) baptised 17 April 1825, Moses occupation, shoemaker. Later on some of his children's marriage certificates, Moses was listed as a labourer.

I have looked, where did you find a baptism for Moses Ashford? to show his parents. There does not appear to be one at Witham. Baptisms for Edward 1781, Emanuel 1783 and Oswald, but no Moses.

Kind regards, Heather

Hi Heather! I found a lot of the remaining information on this website https://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=snowdevon&id=I95309 as I wasn’t getting anywhere really through other means. If you click through you can follow a line back to Emmanuel. I’m not 100% sure this line is right though :(
As for Moses I couldn’t find a baptism but I guessed his DOB from his burial and age

Hi there

I know this is not helping you with the Ashford side of your family but Moses Ashford probably married Elizabeth Stickler who was baptised at Witham Friary 6 December 1789 to William and Ann. Do you use Ancestry? there is a baptism in the Somerset Records. Unfortunately the marriage records start from 1813, so could not see a marriage for Elizabeth and Moses. Seems to be lots of Sticklers in Witham.

I see you are researching my husband's family then.  I have done a lot on this family and it is rather large.

My husband is descended from Moses brother Oswald.

Have you used this website at all?

http://www.flackgenealogy.com/

It has quite a bit of Ashford information on it.

Also this one for Witham Friary:-
