I know from the records in Lanarkshire, they were Catholic. As I have nothing for them in Donegal, I don't know, but I am assuming they Catholic also.

Civil registration of births in Ireland started 1864 but it looks like James and Rebecca were already in Scotland before that date-
Patrick (1861) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQBW-D8H
Rebecca (1864) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQHN-HR7
Michael (1866) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQPT-NQV
Have you found that any of their children were born in Scotland? if so, would be good idea to check all possible census records to see if a more exact place of birth is mentioned (if you haven't done so already)

Lots of Irish Catholic Parish registers (mainly baptisms and marriages) online but a more exact location is probably needed to narrow down which parishes are likely.

I have looked at the census and as this information is all new to me, I will be going over everything. As I know, James and Thomas are brothers, information on their death certs, I am hoping for find more siblings and maybe get more information from that. I have noticed the Hamilton's in Old Monkland Lanarkshire are like so many families, all the same names.

Also check if Thomas had any children born in Ireland as that might help you find a location in Ireland where the Hamiltons might have lived. If I can find anything else in Irish records I'll post here.
