Street name changes
« on: Monday 02 April 18 21:33 BST (UK) »
Hi i have an address for my great grandmother from the census of 1911. The street name is no longer in use but there are houses in the approximate area which would have been built at that time.
The census states 6 front row, Painshaw. Also spelled Pencher and now Penshaw.
Front Row is on maps at the bottom of Penshaw close to the old Penshaw Station.
There is also a Front Street East and West which is still there now but is at the top of Penshaw close to the old village so i know that they are two different streets.
Can anyone point me in the direction of old maps or where i can find street info from the time please. I found a couple of maps online but they are quite vague.

Hi rainecooper,

I found that National Library of Scotland is probably the best place for old maps and you can have a side by side view of the old map and a modern aerial view synchronised.
Active links are now (after 13/04/2018) indicated by bold red italics. Just click on them.
The only stupid question is the one not asked

WILSON; Lancs, Lanrks.
BERRY; Lancs.
BORASTON; Salop, Worcs,
TYLER; Salop, Herefords.

You can see Front Row on the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/432146/553708/12/101064 if you keep zooming out you get the modern map.

It is not named on the side by side map at http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=54.8776&lon=-1.5002&layers=6&right=BingHyb but you can see where it is.

Thanks Stan and macwill
I have looked at the maps and found front row.
Thank you both for your help.
Now to find out if the street was demolished or had a name change.

It can be worth emailing the local council.

I did with my grandmothers old house as I knew my great grandmother had been born and died in the same house but it changed street name and I wanted to find out when.

They were able to break it down to about a 6 month period for me

Also local people may be able to help you, when we moved into our house people referred to the 20 or so houses by the old name - from the censuses the street name changed around 1901 (the 1901 census has both names on, 1891 just old name, 1911 just new name) - yet this was nearly a century further on and people from late twenties up still knew it as the old name
