Look up request please - Oxfordshire parish registers bap/m/d 1538-1812
« on: Thursday 05 April 18 01:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am really sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I am trying to find the Birth of James Busby and his marriage to Ann.

I have tried to check on ancestry but there seems to be a 40 year Busby gap at Steeple Barton where their children are from (across the generations the my Busbys are also found at North Aston, Steeple Aston, Great Tew and Deddington, and many get a second baptism a year after birth at Asthall).

If someone has access to the 'Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1538-1812' data I would be really grateful if you could possibly take a look please? I would love to know what Ann's maiden name was and what James' parents might be called as well as his DOB which I am assuming is c.1740.
As a reference point, these are their children all born at Steeple Barton:

Ann Busby
1761–

John Busby
1762–1844

James Busby
1764–1817

William Busby
1766–

Elizabeth Busby
1769–1770

Jane Busby
1771–

Best wishes Em

No BMD pre 1837 just parish registers.

Keep in mind that they may have been from a neighbouring parish prior to marriage.

Hello, thank you for that, I have amended my title. There is a possibility they could be in Asthall, Steeple Aston, North Aston or Great Tew in Oxon or perhaps even Warwickshire - they are so elusive!!! There are other Busbys all over the place, but these ones are hard to find!!!!

Thanks for your reply.
Best wishes,
Emma

Thank you very much for the link, I haven't seen that site before. It re directs to family search, I have done a general Oxfordshire search before but not parish by parish so I will go through them.

Thanks again for your help.

Archersoftware is an updated version of Hugh Wallis,in the header you will see a column headed "Listed by Wallis" and those that say NO can be useful.
Also worth a look here..https://www.freereg.org.uk/

Hi
Just been having a look at your quest and offer the info below which may help you a small bit. I have gone through the Oxfordshire Family History (OFHS) Transcribed PR's on CD for St Marys Church, Steeple Barton and found this info some of which you may have  - or not!!

James the elder B c 1740 was not recorded as baptised at St Marys. There are some Annes but impossible to be sure which may or may not be her,

Baptisms;
Ann 29 March 1761
John 12 Sept 1762
James 16 March 1764
William 3 Aug 1766
Elizabeth 1 Jan 1769 Buried 10 Sept 1770
Jane - recorded as Jeney - 26 June 1771

There are no other applicable ones 10 yrs either side of Ann or Jeney
In all the children's baptism entries Ann is spelt Anne.

Marriages:
None of the children appear to have been married in Steeple Barton. So presume the family moved away?

I have gone through the Oxford list of Arch Deacon bonds - nothing. Then I looked at the OFHS Marr Index - 1538 - 1837 and there are marriages of James Busby to Ann but none are in the appropriate dates - the closest I see are;
1718, 1774, 1782, 1793 - so perhaps they married over the boarder in another county but the above list is not infallible there are some rare errors and omissions so may be???

Burials;
Other than Elizabeth I cannot see any appropriate burials so again its possible they moved away?
However there is a burial on 8 Feb 1821 of an Ann Busby aged 87 so born circa 1734, so aged circa 27 when Ann was born in 1761 and the 1 st child often got the name of the appropriate parent - but that's a wild stab and difficult to prove!!

So where next well I have all the Oxfordshire PR's here on disc but to go through them all is not gonna happen. I reckon you are going to have to try back tracking and see where they moved to and what that turned up - am I teaching you to suck eggs - sorry.

Let me know if the above was of use - or not and if you want more look ups, just shout
Regards

Hi NDRFT
I am so sorry for the late reply I have been away but I just wanted to say thank you so much, you have gone to so much trouble to look up and write up all of this information for me and I am really grateful. It has answered so many questions.
Thanks for your help and your kind offer of look ups for the future.
