Lots of people claimed to be married when they weren't, and it is common to find young couples taken by surprise by a pregnancy and only getting round to marriage a bit later on.

The 1874 marriage looks a strong possibility to me.

Hi, looking at the marriage in 1874 I noticed the witness a Gertrude Gitting was also a witness for a Julia Wilkinson same father Stephen who got married in November 1874.  I don't think there was a Julia on the 1881 census.

Right. I think sister "Alice" in 1871 was supposed to be Julia. If you look at the LONGBOTTOMs in 1881-they do have a daughter Alice who looks like the one from 1871.

NOW-I think both William and Julia were registered as COLMAN:

GRO BIRTHS
COLMAN, JULIA       mmn WILKINSON
1851  D Quarter in EAST RETFORD UNION  Volume 15  Page 501

COLMAN, WILLIAM    mmn   WILKINSON
1848  D Quarter in EAST RETFORD UNION  Volume 15  Page 469

William is on the 1851 census as COLEMAN with father Stephen and mother Elizabeth. Note William is listed as Fergus William COLEMAN!

In 1861 mother Elizabeth seems to have reverted back to WILKINSON. Both William and Julia are with her then.

Good luck!

Maureen

hi, the father Stephen on the 1874 marriage is a Stephen Wilkinson. I think the above are two different families unless Alice was his wifes sister, then she would have been Alice Smith who married a Wilkinson. My head is a shed at the moment so will continue tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

baptism Ordsall
12 Nov 1848 Fergus William son of Stephen COLMAN and Elizabeth abode Thrumpton father a gardener.
Baptism Grove
7 Dec 1851 Julia parents Stephen and Elizabeth COLEMAN abode Grove father a labourer.

This may tie in with the above baptisms I gave....
Ordsall
15 July 1827 Thomas son of Thomas & Elizabeth Wilkinson farmer abode Thrumpton
6 Sep 1829 Elizabeth same parents as Thomas, Yeoman abode Ordsall.
I would hazard a guess and say Elizabeth did not marry Stephen. When he shipped off home, she went back to her own name.
