Missing Babies in Llanegwad/Nantgaredig
« on: Thursday 05 April 18 22:41 BST (UK) »
This is going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack  ::)

My 2nd great aunt and her husband, according to the 1911, had lost three children. I've found one, but the other two are eluding me. The biggest issue is that the names are both very common... He was Henry DAVIES and she was Anne nee JONES. As you can imagine, looking for these children via the GRO leads to a list of babies as long as your arm.

Having children in the tree marked "Baby Davies" irks me. I'd like to find them and record them properly but a search area as wide as "Llandilofawr" is too big. I don't know if anyone has access to any Llanegwad burial records, for instance, who might be able to point more precise fingers.

The marriage was in 1891 (Llanfihangel Abercowin).
Known children:
Walter Jones 1892 (Llanfihangel Abercowin) - 1910 Llandilofawr
Llewellyn 1893 Llanegwad - 1916 (Mesopotamia)
Richard 1895 " - 1918 (The Somme)
James 1898 "
Elizabeth 1901 "
Theophilus 1904 "
Mary 1907 "

Address 1901 - (Llether??) Cottage, Llanegwad
Address 1911 - 2 (Blainpared??) Nantgaredig
By 1916 they had moved to Abernant, but hopefully they didn't lose any more by then (aside from the two war victims).

Can anyone find my poor wee mites?  :(

Just had a look at Llanegwad burial registers - they go up to Jan 1905.

Cannot see any Davieses, abode Llether Cottage or Llandilowfawr.

Davies burials in the age range were -
Mary Jane Davies, Tynywaun, 1 Mar 1902, 11 months
Thomas Jeremy Davies, Llwynfortune, 10 Mar 1902, 4 months
John Llewellyn Davies, Tynycoed, 12 Jan 1905, 18 months

I checked both Llanegwad (ends 1901) and Llanfihangel Abercowin (ends 1907) baptismal registers - no children baptised to a Henry and Anne Davies.

Checked Llanfihangel parish marriage register but couldn't find an 1891 marriage for Henry/Anne.

Thank you very much.

Looking at it I think the marriage in Llanfihangel Abercowin might have been a little bit of an assumption on my part. It was Carmarthen Reg District.

Anne, her sister and brother were themselves christened as a mass event- my 2xgt grandfather was 9 years old at that point so it's entirely possible I've got forever missing children on that generation. That might be one reason why the christenings weren't there. Anne's mother's side of the family don't appear to have been christened at all, so probably non-conformist of some description.

I knew this wasn't going to be easy. I'm grateful for you looking, much appreciated :)

I mean that there may have been others who died unchristened because the parents didn't christen the surviving children until later. I've never seen any evidence of any further children than the named ones.

I've got it elsewhere in my tree- a mass christening of children where they are numbered "Name, xth dau of..." and there are children in the sequence missing!

I had a look at Welsh newspapers under the search key "blaenparcel" for possible mention of Davies burials. No joy.

But, did they move to Garnant? Spotted -
https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3679216/3679220/47/blaenparcel
See para headed "GARNANT"

It mentions how Mr and Mrs Henry Davies, formerly of Blaenparcel, Felingwm-Uchaf, a pleasant family, had lost two brave sons in the flower of their days and at the peak of their powers on the battlefield.

Thank you again Hanes. I'm not sure why this thread got resurrected after a year but it is interesting since I recently was DNA matched with a descendant of Henry and Anne.

It's sad for me to note, however, that even after starting to learn Welsh two years ago I still can't read that article  :o
