Ernest Edward HART
« on: Friday 06 April 18 11:59 BST (UK) »
Born 1875 married to Lizzie with 3 sons - Ernest, Sidney and Richard. Was in WW1 but left his wife and family and his death has never been recorded. Did he emigrate? There are so many men with the same name (thanks to Oscar Wilde and cousin Ernest!) that it is almost impossible to find him. He is my grandfather and all his sons are now deceased. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful.

If you have his exact date of birth, you could try looking at the 1939 register.

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register

A lot of entries have the correct day and month, but sometimes the year can be out.

There's a tree on Ancestry which records a birth date of 29 April 1875 for the Maidstone man. No mmn though, which is a bit odd.

Mmn was Milner per the GRO index.

His ages in the censuses would, if accurate, suggest his birthday fell before census day each year rather than after it.

I.e. he is already 6 in the 1881 census, and later entries are consistent with this (not found him in 1891 though).

The birth was registered in the June quarter - but if they were late with the registration they may have given a false date. I've seen that a few times.

Thank you to everyone who has replied - I didn't know you would be so quick!  Yes, I have tried all the death certificates from Marlborough, Birmingham, Hove, etc. No luck. Yes, they were living in Goring in 1911.  Don't know when he left his wife and 3 kids (my other maternal grandfather did the same, leaving wife and 6 kids!).
He left WW1 as a lieutenant, so not sure if he joined another regiment overseas.
His birthday 29/04/1875 at Maidstone. I think that Maidstone was also a military barracks also.  Have looked at the 1939 Register (thanks) but no luck there either.
