Inquest records
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 14:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a death certificate for someone who died in 1936, and it states that an inquest was held.  Is there anywhere that keeps inquest records or is this a non-starter?

Many thanks.

The best place to find out about inquests is in the local paper.

If you can name the person, then someone may be able to do a look up for you.

Unless it turned out to be a suspicious death though, there may be nothing to be found.

Inquests were often held if the person died unexpectedly without having seen a doctor or appearing to be ill for (I think) 2 weeks beforehand.

Contact the local/county archives with details of the inquest (date, name of coroner, name of deceased) and ask if they hold the records.

Thank you.  The person's name was Henry Lambert, he died on 17 March 1936 at Herefordshire  General Hospital and according to the death certificate an inquest was held on 20 March 1936.  Cause of death was fracture dislocation of spine accidentally sustained - open verdict.  I was just wondering about the circumstances of the accident and what could have happened to him.  His occupation was farm labourer so I'm wondering whether it could have been an accident he had whilst working.
