My Later Mother was always telling me about her Grandmother Matilda Newsome.
The Newsomes I was told, had a large Travelling Fairground based around Darlington where we were all born. This must have been around the turn of the century, as my Mother was born in 1912. Does anyone know anything about the Newsomes?
Do the current Newsomes have a fairground, Mum used to tell me there were a lot of Travellers associated with the Newsomes as well.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There is a newspaper article about a fairground fire -

Newcastle Journal 26 March 1942

A fire broke out in a roundabout owned by Arthur Newsome at the fairground in Feethams Field, Doncaster. The outbreak was soon distinguished by the fire brigade. The loss was estimated at £300.

If you input 'Newsome Fairground' to a search engine you will find a number of articles relating to the fairground.

Your mother's name could help us to locate Matilda in past census or other records.

I am not 100% sure but I think the fairground run in Benllech Anglesey in the 1950/1960's belonged to a branch of the News one family.  I remember two sons - Obe was called Martin the other may have been Colin.

Hi all, I have no connection to the Newsome family but decided to put Newsome *Showman* as occupation, in 1911 census, noted 4, all seem to be born Scotland one I particulary liked was the Arthur Newsome 32 with wife Clara and family in a Caravan at Wheatley Hill Farm, Thornley SO, Wingate, Durham, looks to have had some sort of cinema?
In 1901 he is the son of one of the other 4, George & Leonorah Newsome along with numerous other Travelling Showman in Gillsbridge Avenue, Garrison Field, Sunderland
