Wilts Baptism - Nanny Sleey abt 1760
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 00:08 BST (UK) »
H all,

I have a marriage of a Nanny Sleey to Stephen Palmer 7-10-1777 in Purton.

I'm having trouble in finding a possible baptism for Nanny and wonder if anyone could help.
I believe "Nanny" may be a Hanny or Fanny but the original register clearly states Nanny.
H all,

I should add I have found several entries for "Sly" which could  be the correct name  but nothing comes up for Nanny only Ann.

Any most appreciated.

Hi Jan,

Many thanks for your help. I didn't have those details so its good to to keep for the future.

During my searches I looked at the original parish registers on-line with Anc..y but couldn't find any reference to a Nanny Sleey or anything closely resembling her name in Purton.

On reflection, perhaps Nanny was a mis-heard name and could be Fanny, but still nothing found.

I have found entries for ;Ann    Sly  - Wanborough
                                    Edward  "    - Aldbourne
                                    Hannah  "    - Wanboro'
                                    John      "    - Aldbourne/Wanboro'
                                    Sarah    "     -        "              "

I will check out Cricklade.

Hi all,

Thanks all for your help.

I've been thru the actual Purton parish registers on-line from about 1745 to 1765 and the nearest I can find is the bapt. for Ann Gleed d/o "Richolus"  15-6-1760. If Ann became Nanny then a marriage in 1777 is a possible.

I suppose "Gleed" could have been taken for "Sleey" taking into account country accents.

Anyone care to make comments?

The father's name on the 1760 baptism is Nicholas not Richolus (Ancestry have indexed it as Nicholas but have screwed the search results which have no parish showing) and daughter Ann as Ann Gleed was the executor of his Will in Feb 1786, which can be viewed on Ancestry, although at the moment you can only get to it through searching on the "Wiltshire, England, Wills and Probate, 1530-1858" collection search page and not the main search page which isn't working properly. ::)  She would appear to be the Ann Gleed who married Thomas Cutts in Purton in Dec 1786 and was buried in the parish in 1847.

Purton isn't that far from either the Berkshire and Gloucestershire county borders so she could have been baptised in either of those.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your help. I think it will be one of those "brick walls" regarding Nanny Sleey so will probably have to put that search aside for time being.

I will however continue to look in both Gloucs & Berks.
