Maybe married before??

That is that standard wording on an English birth certificate to denote the maiden name of a married mother.

As you say, the French word née (born) is used colloquially and in other contexts to mean the same thing.

Just checked a couple of birth certs I had handy - they all say  Mrs X formerly Y, when it means Nee Y.

Just a different terminology.

Kemp - Essex

Assuming the birth registration was in England then the usual format would be "Murray formerly Sewell".  I don't know about other registrations even in the UK.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

It is a subtle difference. A maiden name is not the same thing as a birth name.

For registration purposes a woman's maiden name is the name she used when she first married, which will usually be the name she used from birth but not necessarily.
