Help with Place name
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 19:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all.  I have an ancestor living in Swansea with a birthplace listed as, "Kenneth County Cork;" on the 1856 UK Census.
This is clearly an error by the enumerator.  Been looking for a possible alternative, almost certainly in the West Cork area.

1. Have had the idea that maybe its Kilmichael and the enumerator has written Kenneth, either because he could not be bothered to calculate the spelling, or simply  put another male name down, as he heard the Michael element of the name.
2. Simply misheard and wrote what he thought he heard.

Anyone have any ideas please?  Most grateful.
Diolch/ thanks.  Keith

This is a wild shot. Kenmare, although it's in Kerry. May have been the nearest town to where they came from.

Thanks Maiden.  That really is a possibility, isn't it?  Keith

This site lists all the townland names in Co. Cork. There’s quite a few.  The one your ancestor comes from is probably quite small and the spelling would be unfamiliar to many. It may not even begin with a “K” as that sound can come from words beginning with “C” too. Keenrath might fit Kenneth too.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
