Made by the same hand?
« on: Thursday 12 April 18 00:14 BST (UK) »
Hello all, I have a record dating to 1872 on which there is a signature of interest to me. A second record dating to 1877 of an event some 160 miles away has another signature which I am wondering was possibly made by the same hand.
I have a firm opinion myself but found that a cousin has the opposite opinion to me. I wonder if any kind folk might take a look for me please to see what others might think. I'm not happy to just go by my own opinion knowing that my cousin disagrees with me just in case I am letting my brain see what I want it to see rather than what the truth is.
Thank you.

Hi,

I would say that they are two different signatures.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

There are great similarities.
Which came first? The one on the left or the one on the right?
The left hand one looks as if the writer was either ill or perhaps had been drinking, not as clearly written as the right hand one .
Same name and formation is the same but more careless, there is some reason for the dilfference.

The signature on the left was the earlier one written as P Redmond.
The later one on the right had the initial F added between the P & Redmond.

I think there are many features that suggest they are the same person's hand.
1 the fact that both are signed with initial (s) not full names
2 the form of the P and the fact it's written to join to the next letter.
3 the link between d and m is distinctive
4 the form of o and n as well as the way the R seems to have formed although they look different .
I would add another point in favour if the first one was written by someone you know to have had a middle name F.

Against would be the general difference, mostly the bad/missing e in the first, and the doubt you mention of the distance between the places - and the fact you're asking suggests doubt.
Another factor against would be if there was known to exist two related people, say brothers, one named P and one PF.  Then they could have similar writing styles.

In my mind's eye I see too many points of similarity making me think that they are both made by the same hand.
The man's name was Patrick Francis Redmond and I believe it was correct that he did move to another city to make a new life for himself.
Whilst I see so many matching points my cousin seems to focus on the differences bringing us to differing views. In my mind I have no doubt but thought it best to ask for the views of others just in case I was letting myself be unconsciously swayed by the known facts.
Many thanks for your help.

Enough similarities to be possible, it would be interesting to see other examples

Same! I don't write two signatures the same myself but there will be similarities!
