Robert is still alive in 1881, a 70 year old widower living in Stirling with a married son (also called Robert) who was born in Edinburgh in 1847.

So finding a baptism for Robert would give us the name of his mother  :)

added - not found so far but 1851 might give it

Possible marriage of Robert MacKenzie jnr to Margaret Walker Russell in 1873 in Johnstone Dumfries. Eldest son Andrew Walker Mackenzie born in Johnstone, Dumfries in 1874. Marriage would show his mother’s name. Can’t find any obvious contenders for Robert jnr in census prior to 1881.

Robert jnr died in Edinburgh in 1901. Confirmation was granted to his widow Margaret Russell or MacKenzie. Death certificate should also provide name of his mother. Have now also found him in 1871 working as a Coachman in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire, but can’t see him prior to that.

That is a much better fit for Robert, wife Mary and children, Gadget  :) Mary Petrie/McKenzie died likely in 1872 at the age of 52 in the Edinburgh area.

There is this potential Pedigree File on FS www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:394M-SDD for Robert McKenzie and his two wives...sadly not Sarah Burns it seems but would need to be confirmed.

Haven't managed to find him yet in 1851.

Just checked  the tree again.  Catherine died in 1848 so Robert could have married again between then and his marriage to Mary Petrie.
