Does anyone know of a site where I can place details of missing ( believed stolen) WW1 medals
in the hope of recovering them

First thought is to watch Ebay, named medals usually have the name in the description.  Second is to get in touch with one of the medal dealers (North east Medals for example) and ask their advice, they may have a network - don't know but no harm in trying.

Others I am sure will have ideas.

It depends which regiment/battalion he was in. Regimental museums often have alot of service medals.
Woollen and the variations thereof (Woolin, Woollin, Woolen etc) in the West Riding area
