John Handman or Hanman - Westbury/Newent area in 1700s
« on: Saturday 21 April 18 13:04 BST (UK) »
Hallo everyone.

I am wondering if anyone can help a friend of mine with a brick wall she hopes to break down.

She has a problem with a distant relative John Handman (the family name was/is spelt Hanman later on).  Apparently John - who was the son of William and Abigail Handman - died in 1722.  His parents were married in Dymock on 12th August 1721 and Abigail died shortly after John's birth.

He married Mary Hatten of Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire.

She possesses several wills that relate to Hanmans in the Westbury/Newent area and was hoping that they would help her draw a detailed family tree but it has doen the opposite unfortunately.

We would be very grateful if anyone can confirm the date of his death and even perhaps his burial and if so where both happened.  Any information that can be found out about this family would be great.

Thank you for reading this post - Samanthator

JOHN Handman christened 4 April 1722 Dymock
Death 21 October 1722
Parents WILLIAM/ABIGAL
(Source England Births and Christenings on Familysearch.Org)

So not sure what you mean by this;
He married Mary Hatten of Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire.

Do you mean William remarried to Mary Hatten?

Trish :)

You do say that this John died in 1722 the same year his mother Abigail died. There definitely was a John Handman who married a Mary Hatten, and they seem to have had several children. The marriage was 12/4/1759 -children Mary 1761; William 1764-1847; John 1767-1767; Joan 1773 and a possible Charles White Hardman 1776.Perhaps William remarried and had another John with his new wife as they often reused Christian names at this time.
regards.

If you look at the Forest of Dean records   (under the Marriage Allegations/Marriage Bonds (2 entries with different information) and the marriage under the 'normal' records.

John HANMAN (Batchelor, Yeoman of Westbury)  marriage to Mary HATTON - 5 April 1759

This marriage was by licence, and John HANMAN was aged 25 which is c1734

Mary was aged 16

---

As this couple had at least one child named Joan

?  Also by Licence, there is the marriage of William HANMAN aged 25, Westbury to Joane WINTLE, aged 26, 21 July 1716 at Westbury

---

The Forest of Dean records for the christening of John & Mary children - are transcribed as:

Mary HENMAN - 1760
William HANMER - 1764
John HANMAN - 1767
Joan HANNMAN - 1773

and

7 July 1776
Charles White HARMLEY - mother: Mary
Notes: Son of:  in this record a surname was not clear so the best guess was given

The Will of Joan HANDMAN of Westbury on Severn, Widow - dated 1766 - talks about her land and only mentions her son JOHN written : in 1752

Forest of Dean records have baptisms at Westbury on Severn, for William & Joan HANMAN, Elizabeth 1723 and Thomas 1727

Thank you so much for all your replies - my friend is very grateful.  At present she is unwell and to receive this information has been very cheering for her.  When she is better, I may post some follow-up questions from her after she has taken on board all the new details she now has.

So thank you again from both of us.
