Irish Roots
« on: Thursday 26 April 18 00:41 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone.

I am tracing my Irish roots.  My grandfather, John Desmond McCarthy was born in Cahircceen in 1903. His father George McCarthy died  in an accident before my grandfather was born. After his birth and sometime later his mother, Mary McGuire went off to Dublin to find work. My grandfather was sent to London to an uncle for school. From what I know my grandfather travelled the world and eventually reached Australia in an English vessel in 1935 and enlisted in NSW, Australia for World War 11 , posted to New Guinea, Papua New Guinea in 1942 or thereabouts. He died in Australia in 2002.  I have looked up several genealogy websites including Irish but have not established anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Jane McCarthy

Welcome to rootschat Jane.  :)

Irish research is difficult and I will leave it to the experts to help you with this, but it may be a start if you can locate your family in the 1911 and 1901 Irish censuses:

I didn't use a Surname, simply to allow for variations in spellings of Surname.....

I could waste an hour looking for stuff in Kerry  only to be told

"Oh she went to her mother's after George died in Donegal..,,,,,,..grrrrrrrrrrr."     or something similar

so post any clues you have   or          amend any searches I've done

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your replies.

I don't have any info on George McCarthy (Great grandfather) except that from family collection,  he died in an accident before his son John Desmond McCarthy (my grandfather) was born in 1903 in Cahircbeen, County Kerry, his mother Mary McGuire (great grandmother) went off to Dublin sometime later. I don't have much info regarding residence at that time and ages of great grandparents. I am only  going by the family collection information I have but anything on my grandfather would be of great help. He died in 2002 in Australia and I have his Death Cert, would very much like to trace his Birth Cert but it looks like i hit a brickwall. Thank you all.
